This book is a biographical narrative of Li Yuqin, the fourth wife of Puyi, the last emperor of China and the twelfth and final ruler of the Qing dynasty. Still a 15-year-old girl student, Li Yuqin was designated as Puyi's Concubine Fu, which is a starting point of her dramatic life. She experienced a transitory life of luxury in palace, spent some time in a prison in Changchun follwoing the callapse of the puppet state of Manchukuo, worked at odd jobs and borrowed travel expenses. Although she divorced Puyi in 1957 and later married a technician, Li and her family became targets for attack by the Red Guards during the Cultural Revolution because she used to be Puyi's concubine. The vicissitudes of her life is a mirror of modern Chinese history.
